Flat roof waterproofing has improved significantly over the past two decades. Traditional torch-on felt has largely given way to higher-performance systems that last longer, carry manufacturer warranties, and perform better in our wet climate. Liquid polymer roofing is one of the most durable systems now available, and one we specify and install on appropriate projects.
What Is Liquid Polymer Roofing?
A cold-applied, reinforced waterproofing membrane. Rather than laying a pre-formed sheet, the membrane is applied in liquid form — rolled or brushed on — then cures to a seamless, fully bonded layer. A polyester fleece is embedded into the first coat to give tensile strength and bridge minor movement, then topcoats build the required thickness.
Key advantages:
- No seams or laps — overlaps are the most common failure point in felt roofing; liquid polymer has none.
- Fully bonded — no path for water to track laterally if punctured.
- Cold-applied — no naked flame, reducing fire risk around timber.
- Trafficable — once cured, most systems resist foot traffic, useful for accessible roofs and terraces.
Fix-R
A UK cold-applied polyurethane/polyurea hybrid system for flat roofs, gutters, balconies and walkways: primer, reinforcing fleece in the first coat, one or two topcoats to the specified thickness, and an optional coloured UV topcoat. Fix-R carries BBA certification, and approved installers can typically offer a 10 or 20-year warranty depending on specification.
HPX TriRoof
A polyurethane-based cold liquid system for flat and low-pitched roofs, also using a reinforced fleece. Noted for flexibility and chemical resistance, suited to roofs that experience movement, and applicable over existing roofing in suitable condition without full strip-back in some cases.
Other Systems
- Sika Sikalastic — established two-component polyurethane system.
- Tremco Vulkem — polyurethane, often for terraces and car park decks.
- Kemperol — fast-curing PMMA system for large commercial roofs.
When Is Liquid Polymer the Right Choice?
It suits new flat roof extensions with complex geometry or many penetrations; roof terraces and accessible roofs; gutters and parapet linings; and refurbishment overlays without full strip-back. It costs more per square metre than felt or EPDM, but the extended warranty and superior detailing often justify it on complex or long-term projects. We assess each project individually and specify the system giving the best balance of performance, cost and buildability.
